“Service of
Summons” Definition: A notice to the defendant
informing him that the action has been commenced against him which he must
answer within a specified time, or else judgment with be taken against
him. It is the means by which the defendant is afforded an opportunity to
appear before and to be heard by the court in the defense of his person,
property and rights, and thereby have them safeguarded. The principal
object of this process is to give the party to whom it is addressed a
notice of proceedings against him.
